Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidsim occurs when the thyroid gland overproduces thyroid hormones. An excess of thyroid hormone affects the function of virtually every organ system in the body.
Options for management will have been discussed with you and it has been decided to maintain your cat on medication. The following is an outline of the protocol for initial management along with long term monitoring of your cat. It is essential that this protocol is adhered to in order to monitor the progress of the disease and to allow early detection of any side effects of the medication or the development of other conditions that are common in elderly cats e.g. kidney or liver disease or sugar diabetes.
Initial diagnosis
Blood test for haematology, serum biochemistry, electrolytes and Total T4
After initiating treatment
At 3 weeks - Blood test for haematology, serum biochemistry, electrolytes and Total T4.
Monitoring
Blood test for haematology, serum biochemistry, electrolytes and Total T4 at:-
- 6 weeks
- 10 weeks
- 20 weeks
And thereafter every 3 months.
